I enjoyed drawing when I was in elementary school and high school. People would bring pictures of their kids or members of their families for me to sketch. This got me thinking....carving a head out of wood can't be that hard. Start with a block of wood and chip out the pieces that don't belong. It's that simple! :)
I always thought my voice sounded a little like Willie Nelson when I was using my Danny-O-Day dummy. I thought it would be great if I could carve of a dummy that looked like Willie Nelson so I went to the library, checked out books that had Willie's picture in it and started carving.
Johnny Cash has always been one of my favorite country artist. His voice was always very distinctive. "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" I can still hear him say in that deep, deep voice. I carved Johnny in 1997 because I needed a "Little Cash".
Gladys is a widow lady looking for her second husband. Gladys is carved from basswood. It looks likes she is wearing a bonnet but it is actually a gray wig turned inside out. Here we are performing for our troops in Cuba.
Harley is one cool dude and one of my favorite characters. When I first created him he had wild hair but after viewing snapshots of him, his complexion looked too pale so I repainted him. Not wanting to mess with the hair again, I just left him bald. He looked better...he looked good...he looked...kinda like me! :) Harley is my mentor on coolness.
